What to expect at your first fertility appointment
People come to see our Las Vegas fertility experts from all over the world, seeking advanced fertility treatment and compassionate, personalized care. While you’re planning your first fertility appointment, we hope to make you feel more comfortable by helping you understand exactly what to expect.
If you have been trying to get pregnant on your own without success, your first visit is about starting the process of getting the answers you need. Only through a thorough evaluation and testing of both partners can you learn the cause of your infertility, so you can find the best treatment to help you have a baby.
Our fertility specialists also treat people who are seeking fertility services for other reasons, such as same-sex couples or single people who need help from a fertility specialist to have a baby. Whatever leads you to our Las Vegas fertility center, the goal of your first fertility appointment is to learn all about you and your fertility, so we can begin tailoring a treatment plan designed to help you achieve your goals.
Bruce Shapiro MD explains what to expect at your first fertility appointment.
Welcome to your first fertility appointment
For all women and men who come to us seeking fertility care, we establish a baseline measure of fertility before treatment begins. If infertility is suspected, another goal of your first fertility appointment is to begin the process of finding out the cause.
For women, it’s important to find out if ovulation is occurring and whether released eggs are able to travel through the reproductive system normally. Because sperm issues play at least some role in infertility in up to half of all cases, it’s important for the male partner to be involved in the initial fertility workup as well.
Before your visit, you will be asked to complete new patient forms to give us baseline information about you, and a brief medical history of both you and your partner. A team member will also work with you to identify insurance benefits, fertility drug discounts and programs that make the cost of IVF more affordable.
Carrie Bedient MD helps her patients feel confident going into their first appointment.
At your first fertility appointment, you will meet with a reproductive endocrinologist – a physician who specializes in diagnosing and treating infertility. Our Las Vegas fertility experts will take their time getting to know you and your partner, asking questions about your:
- Lifestyle
- Menstrual cycles
- Attempts to become pregnant
- Past pregnancy history
- Prior birth control methods
- Prior sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) or surgeries
- Any other medical issues that could affect your fertility
Your fertility work-up will also include a pelvic and breast exam, similar to what you would experience at your annual gynecologic exam. Your fertility specialist may also:
- Order baseline fertility tests, such as blood work to measure hormone levels and ultrasound and/or radiographic imaging of the reproductive organs
- Order a semen analysis to evaluate the quantity and health of sperm
