Not all “fertility doctors” possess the same qualifications. Ideally, you should work with a doctor who is board certified in obstetrics and gynecology and sub-specialty board certified in reproductive endocrinology and infertility by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. While many fertility physicians have completed some form of advanced training in reproductive endocrinology and infertility, it is important that your physician be sub-specialty board certified.
According to the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, a reproductive endocrinologist is a sub-specialist in obstetrics and gynecology who provides consultation and/or comprehensive care of women with complex problems related to reproductive endocrinology and infertility. This activity requires additional education and training to acquire advanced knowledge of the most current diagnostic and therapeutic approaches available. It also requires the practice of reproductive endocrine and infertility in a setting wherein all essential modalities are available and used appropriately. In order to attain sub-specialty board certification, a physician must undergo a rigorous and comprehensive process to demonstrate the “possession of special knowledge and qualifications in effectively managing women with reproductive endocrine and infertility problems, as well as couples with infertility,” according to the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology,.
It is important to note, there is a vast difference between being board eligible and board certified. Board eligible means that while you completed a fellowship training program in reproductive endocrinology and infertility, you did NOT complete and pass the written and oral exams required to be come sub-specialty board certified. Therefore, the certification implies a higher level of learning and commitment to factors considered important by the certifying board. Dr. Bruce Shapiro is specialty board certified in obstetrics and gynecology and sub-specialty board certified in reproductive endocrinology and infertility. Dr. Carrie Bedient is specialty board certified in obstetrics and gynecology and sub-specialty board eligible in reproductive endocrinology.
