Uncover the causes of female infertility
In about a third of cases when couples can’t get pregnant on their own, a female factor is the sole cause. Another third of the time, infertility is related to a combination of factors in both partners.
For many women, multiple causes of female infertility are at play, and in about a third of cases, a male factor also plays a role. At our Nevada fertility center, we use the most advanced testing methods to uncover the causes of your infertility, so that we can provide the most effective treatment to help you have a baby.
Common causes of female infertility
The main causes of female infertility include:
- Age-related infertility
- Ovulation problems
- Structural problems with the reproductive organs
- Unexplained infertility
In most cases of female infertility, ovulation problems play a role. Ovulatory disorders are often caused by a natural, age-related decline in egg quantity and quality, but can also occur in women of all ages who have conditions such as premature ovarian failure, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or hormone fluctuations related to eating disorders or excessive stress or exercise.
Structural problems with the uterus, ovaries and/or fallopian tubes are another of the common causes of female infertility. In these cases, physical abnormalities of the reproductive organs can obstruct normal movement of sperm or eggs, or prevent implantation of a fertilized egg.
Some women are born with an abnormally shaped uterus, which can affect the ability of an embryo to implant in the uterine lining. Implantation problems can also arise when there are polyps or fibroids in the uterine wall. Problems with the uterus, fallopian tubes or ovaries can also be caused by scar tissue left behind by infection, sexually transmitted diseases, surgeries or ectopic pregnancy.
Endometriosis is another one of the common causes of female infertility, in which tissue normally found inside the uterus grows elsewhere in the abdominal cavity, at times impeding the normal movement of eggs and sperm.
In some cases, testing finds few answers, and the causes of female infertility remain unexplained. For women with a diagnosis of “unexplained infertility,” advanced treatment options can still offer hope, and our Las Vegas fertility specialists continue to seek answers through targeted research.
