IVF Lab Air Quality Management Protects Eggs, Sperm and Embryos
During the IVF process, our Las Vegas fertility center and our Ovation® Fertility IVF lab meticulously monitor all the things you can and cannot see, including the IVF lab air quality that supports the development and eventual implantation of an embryo.
Embryos are sensitive to light and temperature, and also are extremely vulnerable to other environmental factors. Studies have shown that both particle matter and chemical pollution can adversely affect IVF results. Contaminants can include everything from car exhaust to construction and seasonal pollutants. Viruses and bacteria can also be sources of contamination.
With that in mind, our new facility, which opened in June 2023, features a state-of-the-art IVF lab operated by Ovation, with a focus on providing the best possible outcomes for our IVF patients through advanced technology, including IVF lab air filtration.
IVF lab air filtration combats contaminants
In the IVF journey, we pay close attention to the littlest things that can have a big impact on IVF outcomes, including IVF lab air quality. This means more than monitoring the temperature and humidity levels – though our experienced lab team certainly does that. One of the primary parts of maintaining pristine lab air quality is to significantly decrease volatile organic compounds (VOCs). VOCs are any organic (carbon-containing) solid or liquid that evaporates at room temperature, making them too small to see, but not too small to be absorbed.
The list of VOCs is long and can include flooring and furniture, paints and plastics, perfume and after-shave. They are prevalent and can create harmful by-products, especially for an embryo that lacks an immune system to ward off harmful toxins.
Maintaining good lab air quality
Our IVF lab maintains clean and safe air quality through many measures. Here are just a few:
- Maintaining the most advanced high-efficiency particulate air filter (HEPA) system. An effective air filtration system is critical for optimal laboratory results, and HEPA air filtration systems significantly decrease VOCs.
- Frequent monitoring and maintenance matters. The Ovation lab team carefully monitors the airflow parameters, and ensures filter integrity and servicing of equipment to ensure there is no diminished air quality.
- Laboratory dress code protects embryos. Our Ovation lab team uses micro-fiber scrubs to control particle contamination. These scrubs don’t emit dust and lint to better ensure air quality.
