Exploring the surrogacy medical process for surrogates at FCLV

The surrogacy medical process for surrogates can seem daunting to both hopeful parents and gestational carriers. However, our Las Vegas surrogacy experts believe that a little education can provide peace of mind. The team at The Fertility Center of Las Vegas (FCLV) is here to demystify the process from start to finish.

The surrogacy medical process for surrogates – A step-by-step guide

As a gestational carrier, or surrogate, you agree to carry a child for hopeful parents who cannot do it themselves. You are not genetically related to the baby. Instead, the eggs come from the female intended parent or an egg donor.

When you serve as a surrogate, you will become pregnant through a procedure called in vitro fertilization (IVF). The process of IVF and surrogacy involves the following steps.

  • Screenings. Before the surrogacy medical process for surrogates begins, you must undergo screening to assess your physical, medical and psychological health. You must also have an ultrasound to examine your uterus. The goal is to ensure you are safely able to carry a baby and serve as a surrogate.
  • Embryo transfer. Our Las Vegas surrogacy experts will give you birth control pills to regulate your cycle. You will also take hormone medications to prepare your body for pregnancy. When your uterus has been adequately prepared, one of our doctors will transfer an embryo to your uterus.
  • Pregnancy test. About 10 days after the embryo transfer, you will undergo a test to measure your pregnancy hormone levels. If you are pregnant, you may have another test a few days later to ensure your hormone levels are continuing to rise. If you are not pregnant, our team will perform another embryo transfer at the right time in your cycle.
  • Monitoring and prenatal care. After a positive pregnancy test, our Las Vegas surrogacy experts will continue to monitor you for 10 weeks. After that point, we will release you to your OB/GYN for standard prenatal care until you give birth.
