Diagnosing infertility in men and women
Too often, couples waste time and money pursuing fertility treatments that have little chance of success. At our Las Vegas fertility testing and treatment center, we believe that the best way to help you achieve your dream of a baby is accurately diagnosing infertility, so you can get the right fertility treatment at the right time.
Comprehensive fertility testing for both the male and the female partner is the first step in developing a customized treatment plan designed to achieve family-building goals quickly and efficiently. By getting the diagnosis right the first time, we empower you to take control of your reproductive care and take the fastest, most effective route to growing your family.
Diagnosing infertility in men and women
Because many factors can interfere with conception and a woman’s ability to carry a pregnancy, diagnosing infertility requires extensive testing of both the male and the female partner. In about half of the patients who see us for Las Vegas fertility testing, a male factor plays a role in a couple’s infertility, whether as a primary or contributing cause.
For men, the first step is a comprehensive semen analysis, which can provide detailed information about the quantity and the quality of a man’s sperm. If there are not enough sperm, or if a large percentage of sperm are not shaped normally or able to swim correctly, it can be difficult to achieve pregnancy without treatment. When needed, additional male fertility tests may include blood testing for hormone levels and a urological evaluation.
For women, first-line fertility testing includes blood tests of hormone levels, a physical exam and an ultrasound exam of the reproductive organs. The goal is to ensure that the cervix, uterus, fallopian tubes, hormone levels, uterine lining and ovulation patterns are all normal.
Both partners will also provide a detailed medical history, documenting any medical concerns as well as health and sexual histories.
Together, these tests can pinpoint many common factors that prevent couples from conceiving.
- Issues with sperm quantity, quality or movement
- Ovulation issues
- Age-related decline in egg quantity and quality
- Blocked fallopian tubes
- Uterine structural abnormalities
Depending on the findings of your fertility testing, your fertility specialist will create a treatment plan designed to work with your body to circumvent fertility challenges and achieve pregnancy as quickly as possible. For some people, medication or lifestyle changes may be recommended, while others require more advanced assisted reproductive technology, such as intrauterine insemination (IUI) or in vitro fertilization (IVF). In some cases, third party reproductive options are necessary, such as donor eggs, donor sperm or a gestational carrier.
