Having a uterine septum can make pregnancy more difficult — but not impossible
All pregnancies need a healthy and receptive uterus. However, 4% of people with a uterus have a congenital uterine anomaly. These differences can make it more difficult to conceive and carry a pregnancy. One of the most common uterine anomalies is a septate uterus, or uterine septum. Patients with this uterine condition can find help and hope from our Las Vegas fertility surgeons.
What is a septate uterus?
A septate uterus is something a patient has at birth. Instead of having one hollow cavity for the uterus, the womb is split into two parts. The membrane in the middle of the uterus is called the septum. It can vary in thickness and length.
What are the symptoms of this uterine anomaly?
Most people with this condition have no idea until they get pregnant. However, some people may have more painful periods or pelvic pain. Additionally, having a uterine septum can lead to recurrent (multiple) miscarriages.
Can you get pregnant with a uterine septum?
Pregnancy and parenthood are still possible with a septate uterus. However, you may need a little help from our Las Vegas fertility surgeons. The first step is diagnosing the condition.
- If the septum extends into the cervix and vagina, a pelvic exam can diagnose it.
- For a partial septate uterus (one that doesn’t extend into the cervix and vagina), it is necessary to order other tests. These may include ultrasound, MRI or hysteroscopy.
Once your doctor diagnoses this issue, they will discuss your treatment options.
- In some cases, no treatment is necessary. Instead, the doctor will carefully monitor future pregnancies.
- For other patients, removing the septum using minimally invasive surgery is best. A technique called hysteroscopic septum resection can remove the septum from the uterus.
For patients who have had several miscarriages, surgery can help them welcome a baby. It can also help them avoid complications like preterm birth and premature labor.
If you have lost multiple pregnancies, a uterine septum could be to blame. Our Las Vegas fertility surgeons will help you find out what’s causing the miscarriages. Together, you’ll then work to develop a treatment plan that makes parenthood possible. Contact us to learn more.
