An ectopic pregnancy is serious, but effective treatments are available
In a healthy pregnancy, the fertilized egg implants in the uterus (womb). However, sometimes the fertilized egg implants somewhere else. When this occurs, it is called an ectopic pregnancy. This condition is serious and can be life-threatening without proper treatment.
The Fertility Center of Las Vegas (FCLV) believes in the power of education. As a result, our Las Vegas fertility doctors are sharing what you need to know about this type of pregnancy.
What is an ectopic pregnancy?
This type of pregnancy occurs when a fertilized egg implants outside of the uterus. Some people call this a tubal pregnancy because it happens more frequently in the fallopian tubes (about 90% of cases). However, this type of pregnancy can also occur in other locations.
- An ovary
- The abdominal cavity
- The cervix
- C-section scar
About 2% of pregnancies are ectopic, so this condition is relatively common. This percentage may be even higher among people with infertility.
While this type of pregnancy is common, it is not viable. That means the pregnancy cannot continue and develop into a healthy baby. Only the uterus can support pregnancy, and it is not possible to move the fertilized egg if it implants somewhere else.
If the fertilized egg develops into an embryo and grows outside of the uterus, it can damage different organs in the body. This can lead to ruptures, which can cause severe bleeding and infections. In some cases, death is even possible without medical treatment.
What are the symptoms of this type of pregnancy?
An ectopic pregnancy may seem like a typical pregnancy early on. You may experience additional symptoms, though.
- Dizziness or weakness
- Pain in the pelvis, lower abdomen and back
- Vaginal bleeding
When a tubal pregnancy ruptures, it can cause severe bleeding and sudden, sharp pain in the lower abdomen. It can also cause other symptoms.
- Bowel problems
- Fainting
- Low blood pressure
- Pain in the shoulder
- Pressure in the rectum
If you experience any of these symptoms, our Las Vegas fertility doctors recommend going to the emergency room immediately. There, the doctors can perform tests to confirm the diagnosis. They can then order treatments like medications or emergency laparoscopic surgery.
Can you get pregnant again after an ectopic pregnancy?
The good news is that most women who have had an ectopic pregnancy can have a successful pregnancy in the future. However, there is a higher risk of experiencing another one of these pregnancies.
The FCLV doctors will provide additional monitoring for patients who have had a tubal pregnancy. Additionally, our team recommends waiting at least three months before trying to conceive again, either naturally or with fertility treatments.
