Considering egg donation? What to expect at an egg donor screening appointment
For women considering donating their eggs to help others have a baby, the egg donor screening appointment is the start of the process. Learning what to expect at an egg donor screening appointment is a great first step toward building confidence in your decision to donate your eggs.
Your egg donor screening appointment is a chance to meet the members of the team who will coordinate your egg donor cycle, learn all about the IVF process and start the medical screening necessary to begin the process of egg donation in Las Vegas.
Our team’s goal is to gather as much information as we can at this visit to help you get started with donation. Plan on the visit taking some time, especially since this is a chance for you to ask questions and gather as much information as you can about the process.
What happens at an egg donor screening appointment?
A physician and assistant will go through your medical and surgical history, including your family history and genetic history. Be prepared to answer many health and lifestyle questions.
As part of your egg donor screening at this appointment, you will have a physical exam, including a heart, lung, abdominal and pelvic exam. The goal is to confirm that you can safely receive stimulation medications and undergo the egg retrieval procedure.
The physician will perform a transvaginal ultrasound to evaluate your uterus and ovaries. At the same time, we will complete an antral follicle count to assess your egg reserve and look for any cysts or masses. You will also give a blood sample at this visit to check for any undiagnosed medical conditions or infectious diseases.
This visit is a good chance to review the plan and expectations for undergoing egg donation, including the medications, how to give yourself injections and what the next steps will be to get started with egg donation in Las Vegas after medical clearance has been finalized.
Who will be at the appointment?
You will meet many members of the team, including the laboratory staff, the physician who will manage your care and an IVF coordinator.
Are there any side effects associated with this visit?
The side effects from your egg donor screening visit are minimal, but it’s a good idea to prepare for it by learning about the transvaginal ultrasound you’ll undergo during this visit.
What happens next?
The next steps will depend on the findings of your physical exam or blood tests. The team will review your entire chart before you are medically cleared to donate your eggs. At that time, you’ll return to the office for a baseline appointment at the start of your ovarian stimulation cycle.
The egg donation process can take some time, and you may need to be off your regular contraception in preparation for egg donation. It is very important to take extra precautions to avoid any unintended pregnancy during this time.
