Learn when to consider transgender fertility preservation
Transitioning comes with many considerations, so it can be difficult to think about adding one more to the list. However, when you look back later, you’ll be glad you took time to make plans for building a family. As a result, it’s important to think about when to consider transgender fertility preservation.
The Fertility Center of Las Vegas (FCLV) stands with members of the LGBTQ community to make parenthood possible. Learn what our Las Vegas fertility center team has to say about when you should preserve your fertility.
When to consider transgender fertility preservation
If you know you want to have biological children someday, transgender fertility preservation should be part of your transition plan. While some people decide to have children before transitioning, this isn’t realistic for many patients. That’s why options like egg freezing and sperm freezing can be so helpful.
Hormone treatments play a huge role in transitioning. However, they do have a downside when it comes to fertility. They can harm your eggs or sperm, which can make conceiving with them later difficult. As a result, for the greatest chance of success, we recommend considering fertility preservation before beginning your hormone treatments.
What if you’ve already started taking hormones? Our Las Vegas fertility center can still help you pursue egg or sperm freezing. The process will just involve a few extra steps.
What happens when you’re ready to conceive someday?
When you’re ready to start a family using your frozen eggs or sperm, our laboratory team will thaw your reproductive material. The fertility treatment that you’ll need to pursue in order to conceive will vary depending on your unique situation.
- With frozen sperm, you and your partner can welcome a baby using intrauterine insemination (IUI) or in vitro fertilization (IVF).
- When it comes to frozen eggs, you can pursue IVF with or without a gestational carrier. This generous woman will carry your baby if you and your partner cannot.
Your fertility doctor will work with you to review your medical history and family-building goals to develop your treatment plan.
