Believe it or not, you have fertility options after vasectomy

If you’ve had a vasectomy and now want to have children, you’re not alone. Life circumstances and family-building plans can change, so many men find themselves looking for fertility options after vasectomy. Thankfully, the team at our Las Vegas fertility clinic offers fertility care that can make fatherhood possible after a vasectomy.

What are your fertility options after vasectomy?

Generally, there are two ways you can have a baby after undergoing a vasectomy. One is available when you visit a urologist, while you can find the other option at a fertility clinic.

Vasectomy reversal is a surgical procedure that a urologist can perform. There are two different procedures, including a vasovasostomy (reconnects the ends of the vas deferens) and a vasoepididymostomy (reconnects the vas deferens to the epididymis). The type of vasectomy that you had will determine which procedure is right for you.

Either procedure should allow you and your partner to have a baby through intercourse, assuming you don’t have any underlying fertility issues.

Sperm aspiration and IVF after vasectomy can also make fatherhood possible. First, a doctor will aspirate (gently suction) sperm from the testicles while you receive local or general anesthesia. Then, a doctor at our Las Vegas fertility clinic will use the sperm to fertilize your partner’s eggs as part of in vitro fertilization, or IVF.

Many patients prefer this option because it is less invasive than surgery, and it often provides a faster path to pregnancy. Additionally, you won’t have to use birth control to prevent pregnancy after finishing with family building.

How does a doctor decide which option to use?

Your doctor will order fertility testing for you and your partner to determine your baseline fertility. He or she will then consider your medical history and goals to help you decide which of these fertility options after vasectomy is best for you and your partner.

  • Length of time since your vasectomy
  • Age of you and your partner
  • Desired number of children
  • Desire to conceive naturally or using IVF
  • Family-building budget
  • Presence of male or female fertility issues
