Discover what new IVF genetics technology will look like in 2025 and beyond
Reproductive medicine has come a long way over the last few decades. In the past, the only option was intrauterine insemination (IUI). In vitro fertilization (IVF) then came onto the scene in 1978. Now, new IVF genetics technology is available to increase the likelihood of bringing home a healthy baby. Our Las Vegas fertility doctors are here to share some recent advances.
From AI assistance to advanced genetic screening
The idea of new IVF genetics technology is exciting for many hopeful parents. It’s why they often ask our Las Vegas fertility doctors, “What is the new technology for IVF?”
As the fertility field makes new findings, new treatments and technology become available. While some developments are still on the horizon, others are coming to IVF labs around the United States.
Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning help in the IVF lab. Machines won’t replace embryologists in the lab, but they will help them do their jobs better. AI image recognition and time-lapse imaging can help assess embryo quality in a less invasive way. Also, algorithms can help predict which embryos are the most likely to develop into successful pregnancies.
Right now, our laboratory partner is part of a research program that involves using an AI program called MAGENTA. This program uses AI to analyze images of each egg. It then scores each egg and provides a personalized assessment of it.
The lab is also looking into doing something similar with blastocyst embryos using technology from Alife Health. Once this company receives FDA approval, its tech can predict the likelihood of conceiving with each embryo.
Preimplantation genetic testing (PGT) will become more advanced to make testing even more accurate. Right now, testing can detect everything from cystic fibrosis and sickle cell disease to balanced structural rearrangements. As our understanding of genetics increases, we anticipate advanced genetic testing can screen for more conditions and abnormalities, with greater accuracy.
Gene editing technologies are emerging that can correct genetic defects in IVF embryos before transferring them into a patient’s uterus. While this practice could help reduce or eliminate the risk of certain genetic issues, it comes with many ethical and regulatory hurdles.
