Many women and men struggle with infertility during the holidays
The holiday season can be a fun and joyous time for many people. However, it can feel overwhelming and sad if you’re facing infertility during the holidays. Seeing happy families partaking in holiday traditions can be a reminder of how much you long to have a child. The team at our Las Vegas fertility center understands. To help, we’ve compiled a list of tips to help you cope during the holidays.
Tips for coping with infertility during the holidays
As tempting as it may be to isolate yourself, disconnecting from loved ones isn’t always the best solution. Our Las Vegas fertility center team instead recommends developing a holiday strategy to help you feel more in control.
- Dealing with holiday cards. So many cards include family photos. Others may include birth announcements. If looking at these cards feels like too much, you don’t have to right now. You can set them aside and open them as a batch when you feel ready. Our team recommends reading the cards with your partner or a supportive loved one at your side.
- Attending seasonal gatherings. It might not always feel like it, but you’re in control when it comes to holiday gatherings. You can decide which ones to attend, how long to stay and what you do while you’re there. For example, you may decide not to attend events where lots of children will be present. In contrast, you may decide to attend but leave early. You should do what feels right to you.
- Sharing information. Some people can’t avoid asking when you’re “going to have a baby.” The inquiries can be especially painful when facing infertility during the holidays. You have no obligation to tell someone about your struggles, unless you want to. You can simply provide a generic answer and change the subject. Keep in mind people love talking about themselves, so it’s often easy to shift the conversation away from you.
Don’t forget about self-care
When coping with infertility during the holidays, be sure to take time to do activities that relax and nourish you. This may include taking a long bath or going to the movies with your partner or a friend.
