Fertility preservation for breast cancer patients offers hope for future families

Every October, our Las Vegas fertility clinic raises hope and awareness about fertility preservation for breast cancer patients. We want to help patients take control of their reproductive health during a time when so many things feel out of control. With options like egg freezing and embryo freezing, pregnancy after breast cancer is possible.

Can you still have a baby after having breast cancer?

Life-saving breast cancer treatments, like radiation and chemotherapy, can damage fertility. While some patients can conceive without issues after cancer treatment, others find it more difficult. The good news is that we can increase the likelihood of pregnancy after breast cancer.

Fertility preservation for breast cancer patients typically occurs before cancer treatment begins. The process often takes less than a month and can provide peace of mind.

Below are two of the most common fertility preservation options for women.

  • Egg freezing involves taking medications to stimulate egg growth and development before having an egg retrieval procedure. The lab will freeze these eggs for future use.
  • Embryo freezing generally involves the same steps as egg freezing. However, instead of freezing the eggs, the lab fertilizes them with sperm to create embryos. The team then freezes these embryos.

Once the patient has completed her breast cancer treatment and is cleared for pregnancy, she will return to our Las Vegas fertility clinic. This could be years or even decades later because eggs and embryos can remain frozen for a long time. When she is ready to conceive, our doctors will guide her through a cycle of in vitro fertilization (IVF) using the frozen eggs or embryos.
