How To Cope When Your Friends Are Pregnant

It’s not easy to cope when you’re TTC and your friends are pregnant - Tips from our Las Vegas fertility center

It’s not easy to cope when you’re TTC and your friends are pregnant

When you’re facing infertility, every pregnancy announcement and baby bump around you is a source of dread. It’s hard enough to see strangers who are expecting, but when your friends are pregnant, it can be even more difficult. You want to be happy for them, but you’re also facing your own sadness, anger and disappointment. The Fertility Center of Las Vegas (FCLV) has some suggestions to help you cope with these conflicting emotions.

Tips from our Las Vegas fertility center

Facing infertility is no picnic, so if you’re struggling to conceive while your friends are pregnant, the following tips can help.

  • Throw a pity party (for a limited time). It’s okay to feel those negative emotions but give yourself a time limit. Take time to cry, yell or journal, but commit to only spend a certain amount of time doing it.
  • Ignore “helpful” advice and hurtful questions. Everyone has an opinion, but you don’t have to take them all to heart or even listen to them. When someone offers advice or asks something they shouldn’t, feel free to change the subject or tell them that they’re making you
  • Avoid comparisons. We’re human, so comparing ourselves to other people is in our nature. However, comparison is the thief of joy. Not only that, you don’t know the full story most of the time. The woman who has that baby bump may have been facing infertility for years.

Keep in mind that you can excuse yourself from baby-centric events like baby showers and first birthdays. If you think it will be too much to handle, simply let your friend know and send a gift. She will understand.

When to get help when your friends are pregnant and you’re still struggling

Our Las Vegas fertility center knows that sometimes women need a little help to make their baby dreams come true. If you’ve been trying to conceive for at least one year and haven’t had success, it’s time to visit a fertility specialist. The same is true if you’re 35 or over and haven’t conceived after six months.

A fertility doctor can run comprehensive diagnostic testing to determine why you’re facing infertility. Armed with the test results, you and your doctor can work together to develop an individualized treatment plan that can range from fertility medications to in vitro fertilization (IVF).
