Dr. Kaye discusses why and how more women are conceiving after age 40
A new report from the National Center for Health Statistics has shown more women are conceiving after age 40. In fact, birth rates among mothers over 40 have nearly doubled since 1990. With more people having questions about later motherhood, 8 News Now reached out to our own Dr. Leah Kaye for her thoughts as a Las Vegas fertility doctor.
Why are more women conceiving after age 40?
As a fertility specialist who had two children later in life, Dr. Kaye understands why more women are seeking later motherhood. While some people are focused on their educational and professional goals, others might be looking for the right partner. With fertility treatments, it’s now possible for many patients to get pregnant when they are 40 or over.
“I waited to have my own children, so I think its empowering that women who want to do something similar can turn to the latest fertility treatments to help them build their families when the time is right for them,” she explains.
How can fertility treatments help make motherhood possible later in life?
Female fertility declines with age because each woman is born with all the eggs she will ever have. Advanced maternal age starts at 35 years old, which means hopeful mothers might have trouble getting pregnant naturally at this age and beyond. Additionally, mothers in this age group are more likely to experience complications like early delivery and gestational diabetes.
Thankfully, our Las Vegas fertility doctor has good news. First, fertility treatments like in vitro fertilization (IVF) and donor eggs can help with conceiving after age 40. Not only that, but certain lifestyle changes can help reduce health risks for mothers and their babies.
- Eat a balanced and nutritious diet.
- Take prenatal vitamins every day.
- Maintain a healthy exercise routine.
- Work with a doctor to manage any underlying health issues.
