Tips about activities to avoid while trying to conceive

In general, moderation is key. We want our patients to focus on their long-term parenthood goals and continue to experience their lives to the fullest. Consider the following list of “Dos and Don’ts” about activities to avoid while trying to conceive:

  • Do get out in nature and enjoy the fresh air.
Sunlight helps with depression and Vitamin D production, one of the vitamins that promotes fertility.
  • Don’t add in strenuous exercise.
Regular exercise promotes overall well-being. Over-exercising could interfere with your cycles and negatively affect your ability to conceive.
  • Do eat a balanced diet.
Make sure that your regular meals include a variety of whole grains, fruits, vegetables and lean proteins. Skip the high-carbohydrate foods, such as chips, pastas, cereals and bread, which can increase your blood sugar levels and affect hormones and ovulation.
  • Don’t overdo it with caffeine and processed foods.
You don’t have to completely give up your chocolate nuggets or occasional cups of joe, but plan to minimize your consumption of caffeine, bread and high-sugar treats. Sugary sodas, especially, have been proven to negatively affect fertility in both men and women. Be sure to read labels to avoid trans fats, which can lower sperm count in men and disrupt ovulation in women. Take a pass on all processed foods, which contain chemicals and preservatives that can cause inflammation in the body and reduce both male and female fertility. Your best bet: whole, natural foods with minimal or no processing.
  • Do manage your stress.
While stress may not directly contribute to infertility, it can cause you to indulge in unhealthy behaviors, so practice positive coping mechanisms like journaling, meditation or gentle yoga.
  • Don’t partake in alcohol and tobacco.
Consuming alcohol can make getting pregnant harder, and smoking has been linked to infertility issues, so stop both these vices while you are actively trying to start or build your family. Don’t substitute another tobacco product or switch to vaping if you’re trying to quit smoking, as nicotine in any form can damage eggs and sperm.

We know that dealing with infertility can take over your life. Our Las Vegas fertility doctors will help minimize the negative effects and maximize the positive results. Contact our office to schedule an appointment.
