Many people turn to assisted reproduction to help start their family. Sometimes, the issue is genetic and cannot be avoided. Other times, like with our service men and women, infertility issues sprout from injuries sustained. This Veterans’ Day, we celebrate our military members and the new bill that was passed by Congress to help get fertility treatments for veterans.
Veterans with Disabilities
While serving during a war, many of our military members sustain injuries that impact them for life. Recently, more groups have been focusing their attention on the war injuries that have an effect on a service person’s intimacy, relationships and fertility. Sometimes, injuries that happen to the groin or genital areas can cause problems with infertility. Also, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can cause depression and damper a person’s intimacy with their partner.
Fertility Treatments for Veterans with Bill HR 5325
Recently, Congress passed the bill, HR 5325, which will help veterans who have sustained injuries that impacted their fertility. It allows for the Veterans’ Administration to provide fertility counseling, adoption reimbursement and Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) services to veterans who sustained injuries that impaired their fertility. This bill helps tremendously by helping provide fertility treatments for veterans and in some cases, IVF grants for veterans.
Previously, only active military members were given this service. However, together with RESOLVE, the National Infertility Association and many different veterans organizations, The American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) advocated for wounded veterans and their need for reproductive assistance and fertility treatments. One of the first things they will combat is the Zika Virus, which is spreading across many nations and could affect fertility.
