IVF coverage for veterans is available to more veterans than ever before
Many brave service members risk their lives every day to serve our country. When these same people come home and try to start families, some of them will fight a different battle: A war against infertility. In the past, IVF coverage for veterans at VA healthcare facilities was limited. However, a recent change has expanded this coverage to include even more hopeful parents. Our Las Vegas fertility doctors are thrilled about this change and happy to explain it in greater detail.
What do you need to know about expanded IVF coverage for veterans?
The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is now covering IVF for eligible unmarried veterans and those in same-sex marriages. Additionally, the VA will provide in vitro fertilization to veterans who are using donor sperm, donor eggs or donor embryos. However, it will not cover the cost of surrogacy at this time.
This expansion of fertility care for veterans is a wonderful step forward that recognizes that no two families (or cases of infertility) are the same. Still, there are important limitations to consider when it comes to IVF coverage for veterans.
For example, federal law only requires the VA to provide IVF to veterans who are facing infertility due to an injury or health condition caused by their military service. This means the coverage does not apply to those with preexisting conditions, such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or endometriosis.
Our Las Vegas fertility doctors are hopeful that fertility and IVF coverage for veterans will continue to expand. This is due in part to ongoing efforts in Congress.
One such bill would make fertility care available to all veterans and service members, regardless of what caused their infertility. Although this bill was blocked in March, its proponents promise to continue fighting for more accessible fertility care for veterans.
