Here at The Fertility Center of Las Vegas, we want to offer our patients the best service and treatment possible. That’s why we take time before any treatments to discuss the options that are right for you and your family. During your consultation with your reproductive specialist, you will discuss a strategy for which fertility treatments to use while trying to start your family. Here is what you can expect from your consultation and our diagnostic testing.
Medical History Overview
When you come in for your consultation, it’s best to come prepared with any medical records related to issues with infertility. This could be medical records from your OB/GYN or any records from surgery, diagnosis or fertility treatment you received in the past. This, in addition to diagnostic testing, will help your infertility doctors determine the cause of your infertility and which future treatment options will have the best results for you.
Diagnostic Testing Performed by Infertility Clinics
Diagnostic Testing for Women
Starting a family begins with becoming pregnant. And because there are many factors involved in the female reproductive system, there are many different types of tests we perform to find the cause of your infertility. During your consultation, your fertility specialist will discuss the types of tests we perform, along with the results of those tests once finished. We want to first find what is preventing you from getting pregnant before starting any treatments. Some of these test results can be given back to you on the same day.
One of the tests you may be given is Ovarian Reserve Testing. This determines the quality and quantity of your eggs. Fertility decreases with age, and the amount of eggs you have available will also decrease. A woman will reach her peak fertility at age 27 while a woman aged 34 will notice her fertility starting to decline. Because of this, we take special care of our female patients over 35 years old.
We will also assess your hormone levels, as these affect the ability to become pregnant. Your fertility doctors will then perform an internal ultrasound, which will continue to help us find the number of developing eggs in your ovaries. The uterus then needs to be evaluated. We will look for any abnormalities in the uterus that could hinder the conception process. This includes looking for any existing polyps or fibroids on the uterine wall. These can cause a problem when a fertilized egg attempts to attach to the walls of the uterus to start a pregnancy.
Next, we will conduct a test on the fallopian tubes for any blockage or scarring. The fallopian tubes are where the sperm and egg meet, so it needs to be clear of any abnormalities. The shape of the uterus will also be evaluated.
Diagnostic Testing for Men
Many couples have problems conceiving because of issues in the man’s reproductive organs. So, we conduct diagnostic testing for men, also. We conduct a sperm analysis that determines the quality, quantity and motility of the sperm. We look for the sperm count to be around 20 million per CC. The motility of sperm is the percentage of sperm that move. This is important when conceiving because the sperm needs to be able to move through the female reproductive organs to meet the egg.
Diagnostic Genetic Testing
We will also perform diagnostic genetic testing on both the male and female partner. If both partners carry the gene for cystic fibrosis, this can cause problems during the pregnancy and possibly cause their baby to have this disease.
