The Fertility Center of Las Vegas: Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection

When it comes to infertility, some believe the myth that the women carry the major burdens. Research has shown, however, that men contribute to about half of all fertility issues. When men have a low or absent sperm count, it can make it more difficult to conceive a child, resulting in infertility. Fertility treatments, such as in vitro fertilization, help achieve a pregnancy. Along with in vitro fertilization, Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) can be beneficial for men who face fertility issues.

What Causes Infertility in Men

Many different factors contribute to male infertility and the only way to uncover these issues is through a semen analysis. A semen analysis will allow the fertility specialist to obtain the sperm count as well as examine the sperm for poor morphology (shape) or motility (movement).

If there are no sperm present in the semen analysis, this can be a result of a blockage in the testicles. Testicular sperm extraction (TESE) procedure may be necessaey or surgery may be recommended to clear out any blockages to allow for the sperm to be released with the semen. Overheating can also affect sperm quality through outside sources or internal. A condition known as varicoceles can overheat the area of the testicles due to large veins. Outside sources such as laptops, cellphones and hot tubs can cause a temperature increase in the area, affecting the sperm quality.

How Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection can Help Male Infertility

When previous cycles of IVF have failed or there is no sperm present in the semen, ICSI can help achieve fertilization. Through Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection, a single sperm is injected directly into an egg. The procedure is done with the use of a very delicate, sharp and hollow needle. After the procedure, the eggs are given a day or two and then checked for signs of fertilization. If fertilization occurs, the eggs are then transferred into the uterus through the regular IVF process. ICSI is an integral part of the IVF process and is a standard procedure at The Fertility Center of Las Vegas, included at no additional charge.
