Understanding the Process of Intrauterine Insemination

At The Fertility Center of Las Vegas, we help make it easier to start a family by offering our patients numerous options for fertility treatments, depending on the cause of their infertility. This week, we discuss the process of intrauterine insemination. See if this process may work for you and your partner.

What is intrauterine insemination?

As a form of assisted conception, intrauterine insemination is a process where sperm from a male partner or sperm donor is collected and then placed inside the female patient’s uterus during her ovulation cycle in order to facilitate fertilization. Below are some of the reasons your fertility doctor may recommend using IUI:

  • If a couple has unexplained infertility
  • If the male has issues with sperm count or motility
  • If the male has erectile dysfunction
  • If the couple is unable to have intercourse at the appropriate time during the cycle

Intrauterine insemination is a fertility treatment that many patients use because it gives the sperm the advantage of a head start. Men who may have issues with sperm motility or total number may look for help from this treatment if their sperm has not been able to reach the egg to fertilize it.

Before the procedure, your reproductive specialist may prescribe ovulation-stimulating medication. This helps the female body get ready to become pregnant. During this treatment, the female patient will be monitored closely, so her fertility doctor can tell when the eggs are mature enough for fertilization.

Next, the sperm is “washed” in the lab. In this process, the semen will be separated from the seminal fluid. Your doctor will want the most effective and healthy sperm to be used in the process, free from any undesirable sperm. This maximizes the number of sperm cells in the uterus, and in turn, increases the possibility of conception.

The whole process of IUI does not take long. The procedure is performed in the office of your fertility clinic, normally without any anesthesia or pain medication. The only thing left to do after your procedure is to start looking for signs of pregnancy to see if it was a success.
