Baby In A Box: The Facts Behind Home Conception Kits
Transcript from KTNV.com on May 12th, 2008

Many jokingly call the newly FDA approved home conception kit a baby in a box.

For millions of couples who are having trouble getting pregnant, it might just be the answer they are looking for.

Action News anchor Tiffani Sargent looks at the pros and cons of using a home conception kit to start a family.

For most women, having a baby comes pretty naturally.

Millions of other couples deal with infertility issues and it can be down right frustrating, exhausting and expensive to start a family.

"We have been trying for a year now. Every month it is just again not happening and it is so disheartening," explained Nichole Anderson who is trying to conceive.

38- year - old Nichole Anderson is excited to hear about the home conception kit.

"I am very surprised by this. I have never even heard of this product until we spoke," explained Nichole.

You can get the actual conception kit for about $300 from your doctor or online with a valid medical prescription.

It was created for couples to use in the privacy of their own homes without drugs or invasive procedures.

40 - year - old Wanda Hoyes is newly remarried and even though she already has three children, she desperately wants another baby.

She is considering trying the home kit mainly because the average cost of an in vitro fertility cycle is $13,000.

"It is amazing. It all comes in one kit, this is step one and this is step two," explained Wanda Hoyes.

The kit includes step by step instructions on how to use a conception timing wheel, ovulation predictors, a semen collector and a conception cap to maximize pregnancy.

Because many couples are waiting longer to start their families, local infertility specialists say both the quality of eggs and sperm start to decline.

"Roughly around 12 to 15% of every population around the world suffers from infertility," said Dr. Said Daneshmand.

Doctor Said Daneshmand of the Las Vegas Fertility Center says the conception kit is a great affordable first step in timing ovulation to maximize pregnancy.

However, it may not work for everyone.

"I would say if this kit is tried for three to six months and patients are still not getting pregnant then they really should seek a fertility specialist," said Dr. Daneshmand.

For busy women like Nichole she says the price and convenience alone are revolutionary.

"And for me, it is worth trying, exploring every option before I go into those further more expensive processes," said Nichole.

If the directions are followed correctly the maker of the kit says it is just as effective as most other infertility treatments available.
